With his parole hearing coming up this fall, convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Jay Pollard has fired his attorney and filed for Israeli citizenship, much to the chagrin of his family and supporters in the U.S., with some of whom he has recently dissociated himself. According to articles in U.S. Jewish newspapers, those close to the former civilian intelligence analyst for the U.S. Navy who had very high security clearance say his relatives are blaming the switch on the wife he married after he began serving a life term in prison. Esther Zeitz, a Canadian school teacher with close ties to Israel, has taken control of Pollard's defense and is forcing him to cut all other ties, according to Pollard's family. The only explanation for this behavior has come from a former husband of Zeitz who says she also forced him to cut ties with relatives, prompting him to have the marriage dissolved. Pollard supporters are especially horrified by a blustering letter Zeitz sent to President Bill Clinton's counsel, Abner Mikva. Pres. Clinton, who has the power to approve a pardon or commutation for Pollard, refused Pollard's petition for clemency last year. * LEBANON - Nizar Halabi As the peace process heats up and Syria feels pressure to sign an agreement with Israel, new killings will take place in Lebanon. Indeed, on 31 August in Beirut, pro-Syrian Sunni Islamic leader, sheikh Nizar Halabi was gunned down by three masked hitmen in the first political assassination in the city in more than a year. Halabi was head of the purportedly non-violent Al Ahbash movement which has come into conflict with the larger, violent, Sunni fundamentalist Islamic Group that apparently has close ties with the Muslim Brotherhood which has undergone massive repression in Syria. * ISRAEL - The Uncensored Vanunu Kidnapping Story. The story of the 1987 Mossad kidnapping of Israeli nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu recently made its way past military censors after the journal "Shocken" threatened to take the case to the Israeli supreme court. The journal reported that Israeli naval cadets aboard an Israeli naval vessel disguised as a Panamanian merchant ship saw Vanunu taken aboard, drugged and unconscious, in an Italian port. Now that the Israeli press has published these details, Italian authorities will have to reopen their quickly closed investigation of the Vanunu kidnapping on their territory. * AZERBAIJAN - Israeli Security Training Muslims? According to a 28 August IRNA report monitored by the BBC, an Israeli intelligence delegation recently arrived in Baku on a secret visit as part of an Israeli security training program for Azeri services involving 45 Israeli officers. The Iranian press service said Azeri security officials had previously visited Tel Aviv. It is not unheard of for Israel to train official Muslim security services as Israel works closely with Turkish services which are allies of the Azeri. Although the IRNA information may be correct, one should remember that Iran and Azerbaijan are currently "at loggerheads" and this may be Iranian disinformation intended to discredit the Azeris. * For more info on Intelligence, or to subscribe, write: Olivier Schmidt intelligence-adi@wanadoo.fr tel/fax 33 1 40.51.85.19 ADI, 16 rue des Ecoles, 75005 Paris, France http://www.blythe.orgIntelligence/
