Brief description of the situation According to the information received from the Sudanese Victims of Torture Group (SVTG), a member of the network, Mohamed Tahir Yousif, (19 years old) a first year mechanical engineer student at the University of Khartoum was arrested at 12.00 pm February 4, 2000, in front of his student hostel. Mohamed Tahir Yousif was taken to the student section, security office in Khartoum North. When a friend and fellow student, Hafiz Ahmed went to the security offices on February 4, 2000, to enquire about Mohamed, he was also taken into detention for four hours. Mohamed Tahir Yousif was released in the evening of February 6, 2000. According to reports received by SVTG, Mohamed Tahir Yousif was severely tortured during his detention and his body is covered with bruising. Action requested Please write to the authorities in Sudan urging them to: i. take all necessary measures to guarantee the physical and psychological integrity of Mohamed Tahir Yousif; ii. order a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances of detention of both persons mentioned and the reports of torture of Mohamed Tahir Yousif in order to identify those responsible, bring them to trial and apply the penal, civil and/or administrative sanctions as provided by law; iii.provide adequate redress for the injuries sustained from torture; iv. guarantee the respect of human rights and the fundamental freedoms throughout the country in accordance with national laws and international human rights standards, particularly the Convention Against Torture, ratified by Sudan Addresses His Excellency Lieutenant General Omar Hassan al-Bashir, President of the Republic of Sudan, People's Palace, PO Box 281, Khartoum, Sudan.
