Com. Diocesana - Primer dia del Encuen (english) Fri, 4 Feb 2000 07:59:14 -0500 Via NY Transfer News * All the News That Doesn't Fit source - Comunicacion Diocesana PRESS RELEASE NO.: 003 DATE: JANUARY 23, 2000 "WE SHOULD NOT LOCK OURSELVES INTO THE MOMENT" ADMONISHED DON SAMUEL IN THE HOMILY OF TODAY'S MASS. "LET US NOT WASTE TIME; LET US BUILD A FULL LIFE FOR ALL." DON RAÚL VERA LÓPEZ. THE BISHOP-ELECT OF SALTILLO RECOGNIZED JTATIK SAMUEL'S WORK OF EVANGELIZATION IN HIS 40 YEARS AS PASTOR. Time is fleeing and we should not lock ourselves into the moment as if it were definitive, admonished Don Samuel Ruiz García, bishop of this diocese, in the homily, alluding to the readings of this Sunday's mass. In attendance were 40 priests and more than 500 faithful in the Cathedral of Peace. "In the obvious passage of time -he added - and above all when many things are happening, we get the impression that a long time has elapsed and we have been taken along with it. But for us Christians, time has a greater dimension. For North Americans, time is money. But for us time is a dimension of eternity." "And not only -he continued - because the time that we call life, prepares us to enter eternal life. But also because each historical moment in which we live has that dimension of eternity, because all of human history is played in our own history in each passing moment. That is why each moment that passes is grace-filled." On the other hand Don Raúl Vera López, bishop-elect of Saltillo, seconded the reflection about time, making an allusion to the gospel passage in which Jesus calls the Apostles to be fishers of men. He affirmed: "To fish means to draw something out of the sea to be incorporated into a new life, to bring life to others. It means then that we have to draw together believers and nonbelievers, to include them in the construction of the Kingdom of God. This is a project for achieving a dignified life for all, of building a new history of peace, justice and dignity for the whole human community. If we don't work in this gospel dimension and, in that sense of history, collaborate so that it be built in this way, we are wasting our time. We are throwing our life away." And he exhorted: "Let us not lose time. To build on lies, to build on falsehood, to build without wisdom, is to bring about our own destruction. We should build this new life beyond the limits of the Catholic Church, of the evangelizing task, beyond beliefs and social conditions in order to open the door to millions of people who have the opportunity to build their lives as God has designed." After meditating on the above, he publicly recognized Don Samuel's work, "because in these forty years he didn't lose any time, he dedicated himself to building what is good, true and just". Speaking to jTatik, he concluded: "I congratulate you, Samuel, because you gave importance to what was important. And for that reason this work has borne fruit. This Diocese, which was defined geographically and historically, with all our pre-conceptions of what the indigenous world is, and destined to be ignored, has become, because of your evangelizing work, a very important point of reference in the life of the Church at this time. An evangelizing work that consists in changing a damaging way of life, into true life.
