The IRSP statement comes in the wake of the arrest of the IRSP Ard Comhairle's Dublin representative Gerry Burns in the city this morning. Ard Comhairle PRO Fra Halligan said, "Since September of last year, the Gardai special branch 'heavy gang' has engaged in a campaign of harassment of IRSP members. This has included seizing of IRSP computer equiptment and intimidation of employers and landlords resulting in members being made unemployed and homeless. "The IRSP will be seeking a meeting with An Taoiseach to demand an end to this political campaign by the secret police." In conclusion the IRSP representative said, "The Good Friday Agreement guarantees the political rights and freedom to organise for everyone. We will be asking Bertie Ahern if there is some exclusion clause that allows the political harassment of Republican Socialists. If the Good Friday Agreement has any real meaning at all, it must extend to all shades of political opinion and that includes IRSP members.
