Info: www.freemumia.org via STEPHEN BLOOM **SPECIAL EMERGENCY MEETING WHEN JUDGE YOHN SETS THE DATE** **CIRCULATE TO ALL SOCIAL-ACTIVIST EMAIL LISTS AND NEWSGROUPS** A special emergency mobilizing meeting is being planned in New York City to take place on the evening of the second day after Judge Yohn sets the date for Mumia's first hearing in Federal District Court. For example, if Yohn announces the hearing date on a Tuesday, the emergency meeting will be on Thursday, at 7:00 pm. Our goal is to figure out how to get as many New Yorkers as possible down to Philadelphia when the hearing takes place. We are still attempting to confirm a location for the emergency meeting. Look for further announcements in this space soon, or call the NY Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Coalition hotline: (212) 330-8029, or check the website www.freemumia.com. This first federal court hearing is crucial and we will need folks to mobilize to go to Philadelphia on short notice some time within the next few weeks. Yohn will be scheduling oral arguments on a crucial legal issue: Will Mumia be allowed to present, in federal court, evidence that was suppressed by the Pennsylvania courts. Judge Yohn can order an evidentiary hearing if he determines that the state court's findings were "unreasonable." That is more likely to happen if large numbers gather in Philadelphia for the hearing. This is the only chance during the entire federal appeals process for new evidence to be presented. Higher federal courts will only consider a pre-established written record. It is therefore crucial for us to remind Judge Yohn that the whole world is watching how he rules. via GET OUT 100,000 Flyers for Mumia!! Mobilize for Mumia's Upcoming Court Date--His Life Depends on It! Join in the concentrated effort this coming Friday and Saturday, April 28-29, to blitz New York City with 100,000 flyers for Mumia -- schools, workplaces, shopping areas, neighborhoods, street corners, events. We must educate people about who Mumia is AND build up our emergency response list of contacts so we can mobilize thousands of people to Stand With Mumia at his upcoming Philadelphia court hearing. Use your own organization's literature and emergency response pledge cards OR pick up leaflets and pledge cards -- starting at 10 am on Friday, through Saturday until 6 pm. Special arrangements can be made to get flyers ahead of time for high school and workplace distribution. Also, flyer can be downloaded at: http://www.freemumia.com/resources. Currently flyers and pledge cards will be available at: International Action Center, 39 W. 14th St. #206 Revolution Books, 9 W. 19th St., Manhattan, 212-691-3345 Liberation Books, Lenox & 131st St., 212-281-4615 BlackOut Books, 50 Avenue B @4th St., 212-777-1967 Bluestockings Womens Bookstore, 172 Allen St., 212-777-6028 More stores and stores in Brooklyn & Queens to be announced Also, check the hotline (212-330-8029) of the Free Mumia Coalition for the latest information on where to pick up flyers and for suggestions of places to get them out as well as www.freemumia.com "upcoming events". (This effort is being coordinated by the Free Mumia Coalition, all its member organizations, together with all those who want to stop this execution.) Also, advance purchase bus tickets for Mumia's court hearing are available at the above bookstores. At the Feb 19th Emergency Conference for Mumia in New York, his chief defense counsel Leonard Weinglass said that the next 90 days will probably be the most critical time in the entire 18 years that Mumia has been on death row. Now is the time to make sure that many more thousands of people learn about who Mumia Abu-Jamal is, and why we must stop his execution. Thousands must stand with him on his first day in Federal Court in Philadelphia, demanding that the evidence be heard and that justice be done. The F.O.P. (Fraternal Order of Police) will be mobilized to "kill Mumia" on that day. Mass mobilizations DO affect judicial rulings--let's mobilize to Stand With Mumia! We expect to hear the date of that hearing at any time now. Additionally, there is a major event for Mumia -- A Day for Mumia -- on Sunday, May 7, 2pm, in the Theater at Madison Square Garden, 7th Avenue and 32nd St., NYC. General admission tickets are $15. Call 212-633-6646 to buy tix or stop by 39 W. 14th St. #206 (and get flyers/palmcards too!) Check out additional upcoming events for Mumia and against police brutality and other forms of oppression (all perfect leafletting/palmcarding opportunities) at www/freemumia.com/upcomingevents Here are just some of the reasons we must act: witnesses changed their stories under police pressure; the jury had eleven qualified Blacks removed by peremptory challenges; the prosecutor suppressed evidence and called for the death penalty saying Mumia had been a Black Panther; the defense attorney did not interview a single witness; the defendant was not allowed to defend himself and was banned from the courtroom. PLEASE JOIN IN THIS EFFORT -- YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Phone: 212-330-8029 PLEASE POST AND DISTRIBUTE THIS MESSAGE. via Friends, The Labor Conference for Mumia scheduled for May 12th in Oakland, CA is shaping up quite well. The militant demonstrations against the World Bank and the IMF last week focused attention on the need to combat globalization, sweatshop labor, and environmental destruction. The fact that hundreds of protesters were arrested, brutalized and forced to deal with the "Injustice System" points out the role played by the Pentagon, cops & courts, and prisons in protecting the status quo. Come to a three-part program: One - see THE PRISON-INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX - an exclusive PVN interview on death row with Mumia Abu_Jamal on the "new age slavery of prison labor." Two - see NATO TARGETS - taped in the war zone by award-winning videographer Gloria LaRiva - dramatically shows NATO's systematic destruction of civilian targets in Yugoslavia. National Peoples Campaign / International Action Center - Philadelphia 215-724-1618 via miriam - 13th of May, 2000 --Day of International Mobilitation in Support of Mumia Abu-Jamal. An important international mobilization day has been called on Saturday, May 13th within the Mumia Abu-Jamal campaign . The calling started from USA,by the National Coordinators of Mumia's Defense and hundreds of Mumia supporting groups. In these days the proposal is reproposed by more and more situations at an international level. The Italian Mumia Abu-Jamal supporting groups, gathered in assembly in Florence on April 15th, decided to endorse the proposal and launch in Italy as many initiatives as possible for May 13th and for the following days. It's important that in each May 13th initiative, throughout the world, is visible the international dimensionof this campaign; it's visible that initiatives to save Mumia Abu-Jamal are happening around the world in those days; that the situations, that are fighting all around the world, have identified Mumia Abu-Jamal as an important symbol of their fight; that we are all estremely determined to rescue him from death row. For that reason as Italian Committee for Mumia we have prepared a short text for May 13 and, we launch the proposal to all the groups, doing initiatives all around the world on that day, to sign and give out it (together with their materials). In this way we can make visible the international thickness of this mobilization and so in every initiative, however modest, can be present all the weight of hundreds of initiatives that will be happening at the same time all around the world. Subscriptions to this text have to be send possibly by the beginning of May to: lista@mumia.malcolmx.it specify city and/or state of your group.
