Anti-US Protesters Storm Indonesian State Radio Via NY Transfer News * All the News That Doesn't Fit source - Michael Eisenscher September 30, 2001 Anti - U.S. Protesters Storm Indonesian State Radio By REUTERS Filed at 4:15 a.m. ET JAKARTA (Reuters) - Anti U.S. protesters forced their way inside a national radio station and went on air to launch their support for a holy war in Afghanistan, a state radio announcer in Indonesia's Sumatra said on Sunday. The announcer said hundreds of anti-U.S protesters held a noisy rally outside the radio station on Friday afternoon then about a dozen of them stormed their way into the office. They were allowed to go on air after a lengthy debate and dispersed soon after going on air. ''They went on air for about 45 minutes and it was a live (broadcast),'' Lina, the announcer, told Reuters by telephone from Sumatra's city of Bandar Lampung, some 120 miles northwest of Jakarta. She said the radio broadcast to areas around Bandar Lampung city. The incident was another of the daily outbursts of anti-American sentiment which have occurred in Indonesia's major cities since the U.S. named Islamic militant Osama bin Laden as the main suspect behind the September 11 attacks on the U.S. The largest protest so far was on Friday when around 4,000 protesters marched in Jakarta, condemning the United States. Some of the protesters threatened to round up Americans and take them to the airport to be expelled. Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim nation.
