25 years after the U.S. war against Vietnam, the Socialist Republic of
Vietnam is facing the challenge of caring for those affected by the war and
feeding 78 million people.  Vietnam has embarked on a process of renovation
and a socialist market economy.  What is Vietnam's experience in building
socialism in this complex period?

Le Hoai Trung is the Minister Counsellor and Deputy Permanent
Representative of the Permanent Mission of the Socialist Republic of
Vietnam to the United Nations. Merle Ratner is an international solidarity
and Marxist activist who co-chaired a coalition celebrating the 25th
anniversary of the victory of peace in Vietnam.
