Indonesia Issues Statement of Concern Via NY Transfer News * All the News That Doesn't Fit Jakarta Post - October 9, 2001 http://www.thejakartapost.com RI says it is concerned with U.S. air strikes JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian government issued on Monday a six-point official stance to the U.S. air strikes on Afghanistan. Speaking during a media briefing on Monday, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hassan Wirajuda and Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said thatIndonesia was deeply concerned about the U.S.-led air strike on Afghanistan, saying that it neither condemned nor supported the attacks but was focused on the fate of civilians. The statement -- which was made at Susilo's office on Jl. Medan Merdeka on Monday afternoon -- was the result of a Cabinet meeting that discussed the latest situation in the country following the strike on Afghanistan. Following are the six points: 1. Indonesia is following with deep concern the military action taken by the U.S. government following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington D.C. 2. Indonesia also notes that the operation is not directed against the people of Afghanistan or Muslims but was aimed at limited targets, which are the terrorist training camps and military installations, and were accompanied by airdrops of food and medicine for Afghan people. 3. The Indonesian government appeals for the ongoing operationto be strictly limited on both the use of power and targets so as to minimize innocent casualties. 4. Indonesia urges the United Nations, in this case the Security Council, to initiate the first step in restoring international peace, security as well as handling the humanitarian aspects resulting from the conflict in Afghanistan. 5. The Indonesian government urges people not to overreact or respond unlawfully, which would further create public and security disturbances. 6. Indonesia has decided to provide humanitarian support in the form of food and medicine in a bid to ease the burden of Afghan people whose country has been torn apart for the past 25 years.
