CONTINUING FEARS FOR MORE EARTHQUAKES IN EL SALVADOR Via NY Transfer News * All the News That Doesn't Fit CONTINUING FEARS FOR MORE EARTHQUAKES IN EL SALVADOR SAN SALVADOR, Jan 17 (PL) Hundreds of Salvadorians woke up today outside, afraid of strong repetitions of the earthquake which registered 7.6 points on the Richter scale. The 'quake shook El Salvador on Saturday, leaving over 650 dead and more than 2,600 injured. Fear increased on Tuesday, 17:35 local time, when a 4.3 point Richter scale tremor was registered. The quake's epicenter was 35 km south of Costa del Estero Toluca in Libertad department, over 40 km south east of San Salvador. Soil Technology Research Institute reports referred to 1,170 earthquake repetitions from Saturday-Tuesday 18:00 local time. The Institute's director Jorge Rodriguez discarded the possibility of a sea earthquake - an idea that has created a kind of popular psychosis mainly among the Salvadorian coast's population. Many people from the most affected zones are afraid of mountain landslides as occurred in Las Colinas neighborhood, Santa Tecla city, where over 400 houses were buried on Saturday. Meanwhile, life saving brigades continue the search and rescue for survivers, though specialists do not think that any more living persons can be found among the ruins of houses and buildings partially destroyed by the the earthquake.
