Guatemala: Gerardi Trial Update Via NY Transfer News * All the News That Doesn't Fit source - Aura Aparicio [aura@globalexchange.org] Monday, May 28, 2001 11:31 PM Dear friends of Guatemala, I would first of all like to extend my gratitude for your response to the urgent call for observers at the Gerardi trial in Guatemala. I apologize for not having contacted you earlier but because of the nature and uncertainty of this case, we had no set timeframe in order to have individuals make their way to Guatemala. As of today, we have been informed that the judges will be reviewing new evidence in the next few days and that the trial will reconvene to hear closing remarks on Friday, June 1st. They expect to hear closing remarks on Monday, June 4th and sentencing will most likely occur on Tuesday June 5th. This is the timeframe that we are working with. If there are any of you that would still be able to travel to Guatemala on such short notice, you can make your flight reservations with: Scott Nordwall Travel Fore Seasons 1-800-328-1332 Please be aware that you will be funding your airfare and your stay while in Guatemala. However, Global Exchange can assist in making reservations at a hotel/posada in Guatemala City and provide you with the information on where the trial is being held and an on-ground contact. Unfortunately there was little or no time to raise funds for a formally planned delegation. However, your moral support and solidarity has been transmitted to the team of lawyers in the case, especially Mynor Melgar. I would also like to keep in touch with you for any other Guatemala related calls for-action or news on the situation in Guatemala as well as for any future organized delegations with Global Exchange. Thank you once again for your support. In solidarity, Aura Aparicio Global Exchange 415-255-7296, x252 aura@globalexchange.org p.s. I may be attending the trial this Friday in Guatemala if I can raise funds for my airfare --- if I am away from the office and you would like more information, please contact Moira at 415-255-7296, x226 or moira@globalexchange.org ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012 http://www.blythe.org e-mail: nyt@blythe.org ================================================================= nytcamer-05.30.01-19:31:01-11934
