Ex-communist ousts Bulgarian president in poll upset (18/11/2001)

SOFIA, Nov 18 (AFP) - In a poll upset, Bulgarian ex-communist leader
Georgi Parvanov won presidential elections against incumbent Petar
Stoyanov, who paid the price for continuing poverty, exit polls and
analysts said.

Stoyanov had until recently expected to be re-elected easily, but the
surprise result came five months after the impoverished country's
former child king ousted a conservative government blamed for failing
to improve the lives of ordinary Bulgarians.
