Russia to Provide Tanks, Armored Vehicles to Northern Alliance 

MOSCOW -- Russia will supply the Afghan opposition Northern
Allianceforces with 40 battle tanks and more than 100 armored
vehicles over the nexttwo months, Interfax News Agency reported
Saturday.

The material includes older-model T-55 tanks along with around 80
BMP-1and BMP-2 armoured fighting vehicles and several dozen BTR-60
armoredpersonnel carriers, the report said, quoting an unnamed
Moscow-basedsource.

The value of the military equipment to be supplied by Russia to
NorthernAlliance forces fighting Afghanistan's Taleban regime by the
end of the yearwill total around 45 million dollars, the report said.

The equipment was being drawn from Defense Ministry warehouses
andwould not include any of Russia's more advanced military hardware,
in linewith government policy, Interfax added.

Russia has backed the Northern Alliance for years but has stepped
upcooperation with the anti-Taleban force in the wake of the
September 11terrorist attacks in the United States and the global war
on terrorism.
