"I have asked the inspector general of the Justice Department to conduct an investigation," Ashcroft said on NBC's "Meet the Press" news program of the allegations against FBI veteran and counter-intelligence expert, Robert Hanssen. The inspector general probe follows Ashcroft's announcement earlier this month that the FBI would expand the use of polygraph tests and more closely audit access to computers and other information. At that time, former FBI and CIA chief William Webster was called on to review what changes should be made at the bureau. Hanssen has been accused of spying for Moscow since 1985 in exchange for $1.4 million in money and diamonds. He allegedly gave Moscow secrets that included names of double agents and U.S. electronic surveillance methods, revelations that severely damaged national security, U.S. officials have said. "I have instructed the -- requested the inspector general to do this investigation with a view toward cooperating where appropriate, going beyond or otherwise following avenues that might not otherwise be determined productive avenues for examination by Judge Webster," Ashcroft said on ABC's "This Week." Separately, after the latest school shootings in Santee, California, Ashcroft confirmed on the ABC news program that the Justice Department already has under way a gun task force focusing on the enforcement of U.S. gun laws, a plan that had been announced in February. ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012 http://www.blythe.org e-mail: nyt@blythe.org ================================================================= nyteeu-03.11.01-16:07:01-19984
