UNDP Awards Cuba's Infomed Network on Day for Eradication of Poverty

UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME AWARD INFOMED IN CUBA

New York, Havana, Oct 17 (NY Transfer)--The United Nations
Development Programme has awarded Cuba's Infomed Network special
recognition for their contribution in applying information technology
in the struggle for world social and economic development. On
Wednesday morning, there was a special ceremony at Infomed's office
in Havana, which appropriately included the international community
via the World Wide Web. A special ICQ channel was set up so that
information technology staff from Cuba's Ministry of Public Health,
international development workers, international aid agencies and the
press could all be virtually present at the ceremony, coordinated in
real time by Infomed's able technical staff. There was even a webcam
recording the event in Havana and showing pictures of attendees,
speakers and online participants.

Asunto: Día Internacional para la Erradicación de la Pobreza 2001 

Como cada 17 de octubre, el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el
Desarrollo celebra el Día Internacional para la Erradicación de la
Pobreza, que este año esta dedicado a las Tecnologías de la
Información como vehículo para potenciar la lucha por el desarrollo
económico y social.

Aunque el PNUD ha trabajado en Cuba, como Ud. conoce, en el
desarrollo de las tecnologías de información en distintos campos,
estamos particularmente orgullosos de nuestro papel en la creación de
INFOMED, red que Ud. dirige tan acertadamente y que tan relevante
papel desempeña en los esfuerzos del país por garantizar la más alta
calidad en los servicios médicos universales y que también, gracias a
su amplia cooperación externa, benefician a millones de personas en
otros países en desarrollo.

Es por tanto que hemos escogido a INFOMED como sede este año de la
celebración del IDEP 2001, que proponemos se realice en su sede
social, el miércoles 17 de octubre en horas de la mañana.

Abrigo la esperanza de que INFOMED acepte esta propuesta, que
constituye un reconocimiento al trabajo que desempeñan sus cuadros y
trabajadores que Ud., estimado señor Urra, dirige desde su fundación,
así como a la importancia de su actividad.

Aprovecho esta feliz ocasión para reiterarle mi mayor estima hacia
Ud. y la entidad que dirige, y desearles nuevos éxitos en el
desempeño de su labor.

WORLD DAY AGAINST POVERTY COMMEMORATED IN CUBA

Havana, October 17 (RHC)-- Today, October 17th, is the World Day
against Poverty. Here in Cuba, the day was commemorated with an 
activity at the offices of INFOMED, a computer network linked with
hospitals and clinics across the island.

Speaking at the special event, Luis Gomez Echeverri, Havana's
representative of the United Nations Development Program, said that
poverty "is a multi-dimensional tragedy, bringing with it disease, 
epidemics, illiteracy, hunger and the destruction of the
environment."

The UN official said poverty is a serious violation of human rights
-- constituting a dramatic situation that cannot be justified in any
way. He told those gathered for the event that the UN agency
dedicates the date each year to a theme or sector that contributes to
the eradication of poverty. This year, the UN Development Program
dedicated October 17th to the new information and communication  
technologies that can help to eliminate poverty.
