(787) 741-0716 Fax (787) 741-0358 13 de octubre de 2001 Informe del Campamento Justicia y Paz Saludos cariñosos desde Vieques. Estos son días pesados para todos los que amamos y luchamos por la paz. Las fuerzas armadas estadounidenses y británicos bombardean al pueblo afgano y ayer, la Marina de Guerra de EU terminó veinte días de bombardeo - día y noche, de aviones y barcos - aquí en la isla de Vieques. La moratoria en la desobediencia civil convocada durante estas maniobras nos ofreció una oportunidad de reunir a los diversos sectores y grupos comunitarios en dos asambleas y varias reuniones convocadas por el Comité Pro Rescate y Desarrollo de Vieques (CPRDV) con una amplia participación de nuestra comunidad en lucha. En estas conversaciones hemos discutido el referéndum de la Marina, las próximas acciones de desobediencia civil y la importancia de coordinar los esfuerzos entre las distintas organizaciones viequenses y entre nuestras organizaciones y los grupos solidarios de la Isla Grande y en EU. El 4 de octubre celebramos un Paro por la Paz de Vieques y en apoyo a nuestro alcalde encarcelado, Dámaso Serrano. Cientos de viequenses participaron en un acto ecuménico en la Plaza Pública, una marcha hasta los portones de la base naval - Camp García - y un acto político en el Campamento Justicia y Paz (CJP) en repudio a las maniobras y a favor de la paz. Participaron lideres sindicales, maestros, estudiantes, pescadores, la Alianza de Mujeres, la Primera Dama, Nelly Rodríguez, el Vice Alcalde, Henry González, Monte Carmelo, la Juventud Viequense Unida, la Pastora Lucy Rosario, el Parroco, Padre Nelson López, el Reverendo Lester McGrath, del Concilio Evangélico de Puerto Rico y la Coalición Ecuménica por la Paz de Vieques, entre otras personas y organizaciones. La semana pasada celebramos una reunión en el CJP con la participación de la mayoría de las organizaciones de lucha aquí, iniciándose un proceso de coordinar nuestros esfuerzos y fortalecer la lucha ante las próximas maniobras militares y nuestras próximas acciones de desobediencia civil. La preparación conjunta de un calendario de actividades para evitar conflictos de fechas y para fomentar el mutuo apoyo en las actividades de lucha y protesta; compartir recursos humanos y materiales; planificar con mayor anticipación - cuando sea posible - de las acciones; y la importancia de convocar una reunión entre los grupos viequenses y los grupos de solidaridad de la Isla Grande, fueron algunos de los temas discutidos. Este proceso continuará el 20 de este mes con otra reunión de todos los grupos viequenses de la lucha. Las organizaciones viequenses establecieron como fecha tentativa para una reunión con los grupos de apoyo de la Isla Grande, el sábado, 3 de noviembre. Se sugiere que cada organización enviara no más de tres representantes a la reunión para discutir 1) la situación actual, 2) los roles de las organizaciones y 3) las próximas maniobras-próximas acciones de desobediencia civil y estrategias conjuntas de lucha a largo plazo. Felicitamos a la Alianza de Mujeres Viequenses (AMV) por la exitosa campaña, Cuida tu Salud, Evita la Violencia, que coordinaron este fin de semana con la Oficina de la Procuradora de la Mujer. Se ofrecieron servicios directos de salud a las mujeres viequenses (mamografía, densitometría osea), charlas y talleres educativos. Igualmente felicitamos a un grupo de jovenes puertorriqueños universitarios que celebraron a principios del mes, el concierto, VIEQUES SUENA ASI. Dos días de música y talleres para niños en las tierras rescatadas en la zona oeste de Vieques fueron dedicados a aportar a los niños viequenses pacientes del cáncer. Ayer se celebró el Segundo Día Familiar de la Iglesia Católica de Vieques en el balneario, Sun Bay, con la participación del Obispo Rubén González, música excelente, horas de dominos y buena comida. El domingo, 21 de este mes, viajaremos a la cárcel federal en Guaynabo a participar en un "Abrazo a Dámaso Serrano", un acto en apoyo al encarcelado Alcalde de Vieques. Este evento se organiza gracias al trabajo de la Coordinadora Todo Puerto Rico con Vieques. El 27 de octubre, el CPRDV en coordinación con un grupo de atletas boricuas de la Isla Grande, celebraremos el Encuentro de Caminantes y Corredores Por la Paz de Vieques - por Aire, Mar y Tierra. Desde las 11 de la mañana, se reunirán todos los niños participantes en el Balneario Sun Bay, donde habrá una actividad especial con chiringas gigantescas y chiquititas y una lluvia de flores! A la misma hora en la Plaza Pública, se reunirán los corredores y adultos y cerca de las 12 partirán todos hacia el Campamento Justicia y Paz para un acto de reflexión, música, mensajes sobre la lucha del pueblo viequense y un gran piquete frente a los portones de Camp García. Del 23 al 27 de octubre, el Proyecto Caribeño de Justicia y Paz (PCJP), con sede en Puerto Rico y el CPRDV, serán anfitriones en Vieques de la reunión anual de la Red por la Desmilitarización y la Construcción de la Paz, del American Friends Service Committee, organizción pacifista de los quaqueros de los EU que ha apoyado por décadas la lucha por la paz en Vieques. Esa misma semana, una delegación del La Red de Mujeres de Asia Oriental-Estados Unidos-Puerto Rico Contra el Militarismo, visitarán a Vieques para reunirse con mujeres viequenses y compartir información sobre sus respectivas luchas. La visita está coordinada por la compañera María Reinat, del Instituto para la Conciencia y Acción Latina con el co auspicio del CPRDV, el PCJP y la AMV. These are difficult days for those who love and struggle for peace. US and British military forces bomb the Afghani people and yesterday, the US Navy ended twenty days of bombing -day and night, from ships and jets - here on Vieques. The moratorium on civil disobedience during these maneuvers allowed the diverse sectors and community organizations of Vieques a space to carry out two people´s assemblies and several other meetings, organized by the Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques (CRDV) with the support of a large segment of our community in struggle. These conversations focussed on the Navy imposed referendum, the next civil disobedience actions and the need to better coordinate efforts among the Viequense organizations and with the solidarity groups form the main island of Puerto Rico and the US. On October 4th we held a "strike" for peace on Vieques and in support of our jailed mayor, Dámaso Serrano. Hundreds of Viequenses participated in an ecumenica act in the Public Square, a march to the gates of the Navy Base - Camp García - and a rally at the Peace and Justice Camp (PJC) to denounce the maneuvers and to call peace. The participants included labor leaders, teachers, students, fishermen, the Vieques Women´s Alliance, the First Lady of Vieques, Nelly Rodrígez, the Vice Mayor, Henry González, Monte Carmelo, the Vieques Youth United, Methodist Pastor Lucy Rosario, Parrish Priest Padre Nelson, Reverend Lester McGrath of the Evangelical Council of Puerto Rico and the Ecumencial Coalition for Peace on Vieques, among others. A meeting at the PJC last week of the prinicipal organizations of the struggle here, began a process designed to improve coordination of local efforts and to strengthen the struggle before the next military exercises and our next civil disobedience actions. Joint preparation of a calendar of activities to avoid scheduling conflicts and to foment mutual support of protest and other actions; sharing of human and material resources; planning with more care and time; the need for meetings among the Vieques groups and between the local organizations and solidarity groups on the main island of Puerto Rico and in the US, were among the topics discussed. This process will continue on the 20th of this month with another meetings of the Vieques organizations. The Vieques organizations set a tentative date of 3 November for a meeting here with the groups from Puerto Rico. It is suggested that each group send no more than three delegates to the meeting to discuss 1)the current situation, 2) the roles of the diverse organizations and 3)next maneuvers-next civil disobedience actions and, long term joint strategies for the struggle. We congratulate the Vieques Women´s Alliance (VWA) for a successful campaign, Care for your health, Avoid violence, coordinated this week end with the Governor´s Office of Women´s Affairs. Vieques women had the chance to receive direct services mamograms, bone density tests, etc), and participate in talks and workshops on a wide range of heatlh issues. We also recognize the excellent work done by a group of Puerto Rico university students that organized a week end long concert - SOUNDS OF VIEQUES -with activities for children and dedicated to Vieques children with cancer. Yesterday, the local Catholic Church held its second Family Outing at the Public Beach, Sun Bay, with the partcipation of Bishop Rubén González, great music and food and long hours of dominos. On Sunday, 21 October, we will travel to the Federal Jail in Guaynabo to participate in a show of support for our mayor, Dámaso Serrano. This event is being organized by the All Puerto Rico with Vieques Coordinating Committee. On the 27th, the CRDV in coordination with a group of athletes from Puerto Rico in soldarity with our struggle, with celebrate a Rally of Walkers, Runners for Peace on Vieques - by Aire, Sea and Land. At the Public Beach - Sun Bay - children will participate in special activities with giant and baby kites and a "rain of flowers". At the same time, in the Public Square, runners and adults will meet and at noon begin the run/walk to the Peace and Justice Camp where they will meet up with the childrens group that will walk from Esperanza to the PJC. At the Camp we will hold a rally with protests against the Navy presence, reflection and prayer for peace, music and messages from leaders of the struggle here. From the 23rd to the 27th of October, the Caribbean Project for Peace and Justice (CPPJ), based in Puerto Rico, the CRDV, the CPRJ and the VWA, will be hosts in Vieques for the Annual Meeting of the Peacebuilding and Demilitarization Network of the American Friends Service Committee, pacifist organization that has for decades supported the Vieques cause. That same week, a delegation from the East Asia-US-Puerto Rico Network Against Militarism, will visit Vieques to meet with women from the island and share experiences of their respective struggles. The visit is coordinated by María Reinat, of the Institute for Latin Empowerment with support from the CRDV, CPPJ and the AVW. We are recruiting for the next round of civil disobedience actions.
