RAWA operates as an underground network in Afghanistan, under the
threat of death to its members and participants, to educate Afghani
girls and young women, and to provide essential medical and other
needed services. Under Taliban law, girls and women are forbidden to
study beyond the second grade, and the very few existing services
within the country are denied to them. In Afghanistan, RAWA has
clandestinely opposed the Taliban, and it opposes all forms of
fundamentalism (including the major opposition groups to the
Taliban). It has also been a leading voice in opposition to Bush's
war and the US bombing of the country. RAWA is active not only in
Afghanistan, but also throughout the world, in the numerous countries
where Afghani women-in-exile live, and it has played an active role
in aiding displaced people in the refugee camps at the Pakistan
border.
