Sinn Fein Bans Former Member's Visit to Mumia, Other Prisoners

SINN FEIN BARS FORMER MEMBER'S VISIT TO MUMIA, OTHER DEATH-ROW PRISONERS

Sinn Fein has banned Daisy Mules, a teacher from Derry and former member of
Sinn Fein's executive council, from visiting Mumia Abu-Jamal in a prison at
Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, and a number of inmates on death row in Texas next
month to avoid alienating President Bush! Abu-Jamal has been on death row
since 1982 after being convicted of the murder of Daniel Faulkner, a
Philadelphia police officer.

Mumia Abu-Jamal is an African-American journalist. He was shot by a police
officer when he intervened in a street incident involving Jamal's brother,
another man and the officer. He survived the shooting, and was charged with
the murder of the officer who was killed in the incident. No one else was
charged.

The prosecution demanded the death sentence on the basis of Abu-Jamal's
political beliefs. The FBI had a 600-page file on him, which included notes
on how he regularly exposed incidents of police brutality! In the sentencing
phase of his trial, the prosecutor used political quotes from an interview
with Jamal from ten years earlier as an argument to the jury for his
execution.

Nora Dwyer, a member of the Irish Unity Committee in Houston, Texas, told
Abu-Jamal in a letter that:

"Mitchel McLaughlin, the Sinn Fein chairperson, and Friends of Sinn Fein are
withdrawing permission for Daisy to visit you as well as the prisoners on
Texas death row. The reason given is that Sinn Fein sees the 'peace process'
in Ireland at a critical point. They are now concerned about the effect such
a visit will have on the role the US government will take in the coming
months."
