Support urged for Manifesto - IRSP Via NY Transfer News * All the News That Doesn't Fit source - IRSP Irish Republican Socialist Party Press Statement 29 May 2001 Support urged for Manifesto - IRSP Irish Republican Socialist Party, Ard Comhairle representative has urged community and workplace organisations to full recognition and support to the 'Manifesto on Plastic Bullets'. Ard Comhairle representative, Charlie McGovern began by saying "On June 1st 2001, our class will yet again be subjected to a more advanced lethal plastic bullet. This weapon, as issued by the British state to their forces in the six counties, is in itself conflicting to what recommendations has been laid out by their Patten Commission. "According to a recently detailed Defence Scientific Advisory Council report on the use of such a deadly weapon, it states that this new plastic bullet could become imbedded in a skull when fired head on. There are also great concerns that its use will increase the incidences of intra-abdominal related injuries with the severity of injuries to the brain even higher. "All plastic bullets are lethal weapons. We only have to look at the number of people in both communities, thousands are maimed and wounded. Out of the seventeen innocent people murdered by both rubber and plastic bullets, eight of them alone have been children." Concluding, Mr McGovern said, "Our party fully endorse this initiative by The United Campaign Against Plastic Bullets, the Pat Finucane Centre as well as the Relatives for Justice. In doing so we would urge all community groups, trades councils and unions to act now and equally endorse the call for an immediate ban on this lethal weapon."
