In the Wake of the WTC Disaster - NYCPLF "NY City People's Life Fund" NYCPLF mailing list Dear Friends, This is the first official usage of our new e-mail list. We only wish that the occasion were a happier one. As the smoke slowly clears and gives way to the sobering reality left in its wake, we offer our heartfelt condolences to all who have suffered the incalculable human loss of this past Tuesday's attacks, and our sincerest hopes for a swift and, more importantly, peaceful resolution. Per Dave McReynolds September 11 message: "For the Bush Administration to talk of spending hundreds of billions on Star Wars is clearly the sham it was from the beginning, when terrorism can so easily strike through more routine means. "We urge Congress and George Bush that whatever response or policy the U.S. develops it will be clear that this nation will no longer target civilians, or accept any policy by any nation which targets civilians. This would mean an end to the sanctions against Iraq, which have caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians. It would mean not only a condemnation of terrorism by Palestinians but also the policy of assassination against the Palestinian leadership by Israel, and the ruthless repression of the Palestinian population and the continuing occupation by Israel of the West Bank and Gaza. "Let us seek a world in which security is gained through disarmament, international cooperation, and social justice -- not through escalation and retaliation. We condemn without reservation attacks such as those which occurred today, which strike at thousands of civilians -- may these profound tragedies remind us of the impact U.S. policies have had on other civilians in other lands." We urge all our friends to put forth the message from every street corner, every telephone line, and if available, every e-mail address, the message that we should be fostering peace, not making war. If we are to live in a world free of uncertainty and terror, it will be by virtue of ensuring peace. If we single out people because they "look Arabic," we become that which we decry -- we become persecutors, we become victimizers. Now is the time to put forth the message of peace, and to gather our energies toward realizing a compassionate world free of the woes of fear, insecurity, distrust and hatred.
