Bob Moses & The Algebra Project Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Martin Luther King Labor Center, 310 West 43rd Street, NYC NEW YORK, Oct. 1 --Together with its Child Care Fund and its cultural project, Bread and Roses, 1199/SEIU will host a reception on Friday, Oct. 12 at its 43rd St headquarters for civil rights activist and education pioneer Bob Moses. Moses will discuss the work of The Algebra Project, an initiative he founded in 1982 that seeks to develop mathematics literacy among minority and low-income students. He will also discuss his new book Radical Equations: Math Literacy and Civil Rights co-written with Charles E. Cobb, Jr., a civil rights activist and senior writer for the online news agency allAfrica.com. In Radical Equations Moses and Cobb posit that the current crisis in math literacy in poor communities is as urgent as the crisis of political access in Mississippi in 1961. Through extraordinary personal narrative Moses shows how the same techniques can be used to organize for education as were used to organize for civil rights. Of Bob Moses and his work Cornell West of Harvard University said: "Robert Moses is a towering activist/intellectual of his generation. He and Charles Cobb, Jr. have written the definitive book on one of the most important projects of youth empowerment and citizenship of our times." Mr. Moses will be available to sign copies of Radical Equations, which will be available for purchase at the reception. ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012 http://www.blythe.org e-mail: nyt@blythe.org ================================================================= nytrc-10.08.01-14:57:30-9669
