Fidel invites Paul McCartney to Havana Via NY Transfer News * All the News That Doesn't Fit [Not mentioned here is Paul McCartney's first visit to Cuba in October, 1999, when he flew to the island in his own plane. The Telegraph isn't much for fact-checking.] source - JosePertierra@aol.com THE DAILY TELEGRAPH (LONDON) - April 17, 2002 Castro invites McCartney to play in Havana Edited by Charlie Methven To such celebrated rock venues as Woodstock and Glastonbury could soon, if Fidel Castro has his way, be added Havana. Last year, the Cuban capital held its first Western gig, when the Manic Street Preachers visited at Castro's personal invitation. Now I hear that the veteran communist leader has set his sights even higher, asking Sir Paul McCartney - who is currently touring America - to perform in Havana. "It's true that we've invited Sir Paul - he's seen as a big personality in Cuba," confirms a Cuban embassy spokesman. "We haven't set the date yet, but we're hoping it will all be arranged soon." Sir Paul might be reluctant to brag about it in front of his American friends, but he seems keen to take up Castro's offer. "Paul is definitely interested," says a friend. "For obvious reasons, the Beatles never got to perform in Cuba in the 1960s, so it really would be a bit of history." McCartney's spokesman adds: "We know all about the invitation and we're looking at when we can do it. Paul's current tour is called 'Drivin' USA', so we'd have to change the title if we go to Cuba. We're getting all kinds of requests at the moment. The Chinese have just asked him to play in Tiananmen Square, but that's probably not such a good idea."
