November 1997 LTTE PRESS RELEASE NEWS FROM TAMIL EELAM HEAVY RAINS ADD TO MISERY OF DISPLACED TAMILS There have been heavy rains in Vanni for the last few days, causing severe difficulties for Tamil refugees living in temporary shelters here. In many places, the water has flooded their abodes and has caused substantial destruction to agricultural lands and crops. The rains have also led to a dramatic increase in the number of patients coming for treatment at Mallavi hospital, says the doctor in charge. More people have fallen ill and there are reported to be 1000 patients a day arriving at the hospital for treatment. Meanwhile in Kilinochchi district, tanks and rivers are flooded and threatening to burst banks. Kilinochchi's water department has advised people living in low-lying areas and places close to reservoir bunds to move to higher regions for their safety. Water levels at various reservoirs are as follows: Iranaimadu - 20 ft 9 inches; Kalmadu - 15 ft 1 inch; Akkarayan Kulam - 13 ft 10 inches; Kanakambikai - 8 ft 5 inches; Puthukudiyiruppu - 8 ft 9 inches; Kiramanthanaru - 3 ft. In the Vavuniya-Thandikulam area (Vavuniya district) small reservoirs have already breached their banks. As a result, roads, people's houses and business establishments have been submerged in water and belongings have been spoilt. 2000 TAMIL GRADUATES UNEMPLOYED IN EAST In the eastern province, 2000 Tamil graduates are unemployed, said the leader of the Unemployed Graduates Union. Since 1994, no job opportunities have been made available to these people by the Sri Lankan government, owing to its policy of anti-Tamil discrimination. This has led to high levels of economic insecurity and hardship for young Tamil people.
