November 1997 LTTE PRESS RELEASE NEWS FROM TAMIL EELAM LTTE ATTACKS 10 MILITARY BUNKERS Yesterday at 2:45AM LTTE forces attacked more than 10 Sri Lankan military defence bunkers manned by Sri Lankan police at Solkaipattai, on the Vavuniya-Paraiyanalankulam road. 10 paramilitary policemen were killed while the rest fled the area carrying their wounded. LTTE forces later captured all the bunkers, recovered arms and ammunition, and later demolished the bunkers. There were no LTTE casualties. ONE LTTE FIGHTER KILLED IN BATTICALOA On 7th November one LTTE fighter was killed in a direct confrontation with the Sinhalese forces, at Pullumalai (Batticaloa). TAMIL MAN MISSING A Tamil man Ponnampalam Jegathas (23) - a refugee living at Nallikunchukulam who went to recover belongings from his former home at Sonthakarankulam - has not been seen since 6th November, when he left on his journey. It is feared that he has been abducted by Sinhalese occupying forces, and his parents are concerned for his safety. TAMILS GET ROOFING MATERIALS The Pooneryn Mulankavil Development Society with the help of FORUT and the LTTE administration have supplied to each family in the area 100 woven coconut leaves for use as roofing materials. There are nine Tamil villages which encompass the district, and all families in these areas have been given these materials. The same Pooneryn-Mulankavil Development Society has supplied Palmyrah seeds to families living in these nine villages, after approaching the Palmyrah Coconut Tree Development Society to obtain the seeds. The Palmyrah coconut development society has supplied 10,000 seeds. 10 YEAR OLD CONTRACTS MYSTERIOUS FEVER A 10-year old Tamil boy, Navaratnam Roopathasan, a student of Yogapuram Maha Vidyalam (school), died after developing a mysterious fever. It is suspected that the same fever killed 60-year old Ponnambalam Kanapathipillai who worked at Mallavi hospital as a pharmacist. ST. JOHN'S AMBULANCE OFFICE OPENED The Visvamadu Development Society has ceremonially opened a St. John's Ambulance Office with the help of the TRO and LTTE administration. The traditional oil lamp was lit by the union leader of all the district's business establishments, Tamil Eelam's national flag was raised by the Visvamadu district's LTTE head and the TRO flag was raised by TRO head Mr. Ravi. The St. John's ambulance flag, meanwhile, was raised by the Vanni leader of the ambulance service, Sritharan. Afterwards, certificates were awarded to people who had passed their first aid examinations. The event was accompanied by a cultural festival attended by local people, NGOs, health officers, midwives and teachers. HEAVY RAINS BRING DISASTERS Due to heavy rains, many homes have been badly affected in Thunukai, Mankulam and Mallavi areas. In the villages of Aruthiyankulam, Yogapuram, Otaruthakulam, several homes have been destroyed by the rising floods.
