The LTTE attack took place at Puthur at 12.30 AM today and was so devastating that government troops ended up breaking ranks and fleeing for their lives. Past attempts by Sinhala troops to penetrate Puliyankulam had failed and the military was now trying to by-pass the town, by marching in to Puthur from the Puliyankulam railway station. They arrived at Puthur yesterday. LTTE forces cut across to intercept the advancing column and delivered a mighty blow, causing the enemy to retreat in disarray. The government has suffered tremendous losses in this confrontation, both in men and arms. 17 bodies of troops were recovered by the LTTE. There was also an exceedingly high number of seriously injured Sri Lankan soldiers. A substantial amount of arms and ammunition were captured. 13 LTTE fighters died.
