SRI LANKA CRACKDOWN - 1,000 DETAINED Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source:jai@mantra.com (Dr. Jai Maharaj) Sat, 25 Oct 1997 17:20:29 GMT shri lanka crackdown correspondent report by douglas bakshian new delhi october 25, 1997 introduction authorities in colombo, shri lanka say they have detained at least one-thousand people in a security sweep to catch suspected tamil rebels. voa south asia correspondent douglas bakshian reports. text defense ministry officials say they launched the search in the early hours of saturday morning, sealing off roads in and out of the capital. residents said security forces checked people's national identity cards, along with their homes and vehicles in an effort to find suspected tamil rebels. the sweep was described as the largest ever in colombo. the search follows last week's truck bombing and shoot out in the capital that killed more than one dozen people and devastated three major hotels. the government blamed tamil tiger rebels for the attack. the rebels are fighting for a separate home land for shri lanka's minority tamils, who say they suffer discrimination from the majority sinhalese. the government says more than 50-thousand people have been killed in the 14-year-long conflict. the rebels say the figure is much higher.
