TamilNet: LTTE Report 11/2/97 Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source: news@tamilnet.com (TamilNet mailing list) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Following Press Release is sent for distribution through TamilNet , by the LTTE international secretariat, 211 Katherine Road, London E6 1BU, United Kingdom, Tel/fax: 0181-470 8593. ----------------------------------------------------------------- LTTE Headquarters, Tamil Eelam. 02. November 1997 LTTE PRESS RELEASE NEWS FROM TAMIL EELAM TRAPPED SOLDIERS SHELL CIVILIANS Sinhalese soldiers isolated in the pocket of Karipatta Murippu and Kilinochchi (in the Vanni jungles) are shelling indiscriminately at Tamil civilian settlements. Waves of Tamil civilians are on the move towards safer areas, but shells are falling on their escape routes too. More details awaited. COLOMBO POSTAL DEPARTMENT WITHHOLDS STOCKS TO MULLAITIVU The Colombo-based postal department is adamantly refusing urgent appeals by Mulliativu district post offices for stamps and postal accessories. The post offices of Mullliyawallai and Mullaitivu have no stamps to sell as all supplies dried up long ago. Also out of stock are sealing wax, string, postal bags, employees uniforms, office stationary, postal identity card application forms. The day to day functioning of post offices here is severely hampered by this state of affairs. NEW SINHALA ARMY CAMP BLOCKS OFF DRINKING WATER Sinhalese occupying forces in Ollimoddai (Mannar district) have erected a new army camp right across the main road, blocking off the only drinking water pipe to the region as well as cutting off access to the road to Tamil residents. This being an area where water is scarce anyway, the new army construction will have a disastrous impact on Tamil civilians. LARGE PALMYRAH-PLANTING PROJECT IN VANNI Over 2000 Palmyrah seeds were planted last week in LTTE administered Venavil, a village in the Puthukudiyiruppu region of Vanni. Participating in the planting were the Coconut and Palmyrah Board, Mullaitivu district school children of Puthukudiyiruppu and TEEDOR workers. The Palmyrah-planting drive taking place in Vanni is partly to compensate for the mass destruction to the valuable plant being enacted by Sinhalese armed forces in the Tamil areas they occupy, notably in the Jaffna peninsula. TRO GETS CHILDREN BACK TO SCHOOL The TRO operating in LTTE administered Vadakadu (Vanni) has donated food, clothing and shelter to help 300 displaced elementary school children to start school again. TRO was responding to the reality that many displaced children are unable to attend school because they lack these basic necessities after losing their homes and belongings fleeing Sri Lankan army offensives.
