October 1997 LTTE PRESS RELEASE NEWS FROM TAMIL EELAM THREE JAFFNA ARMY CAMPS CLOSED The occupying Sinhalese military in Jaffna has closed down three mini army camps to supply troops to its ailing Jaya Sikurui operation. The camps closed down are in Chulipuram, Mavady and Vadaliadaipu (all in Valigamam West). The vacancy has apparently been filled by Sinhalese police who occasionally make symbolic visits to the region. Jaya Sikurui troops are facing large-scale defeats and the re-deployment of soldiers from Jaffna reflects ongoing losses in man-power. HRTF CONFIRMS AT LEAST 10 OF 750 MISSING TAMILS ARE DEAD The Human Rights Task Force (HRTF) sitting in Jaffna for the fifth time in as many months has said that at least 10 of the 750 Tamils who have "disappeared" after arrest by the occupying Sinhalese military are confirmed dead. The admission came only after substantial pressure from the Guardian Association for Persons Arrested and Disappeared. The Association represents mothers, wives and relatives of the disappeared. An ICRC official recently stated that the deliberations of the HRTF have not halted human rights violations by the Sinhalese armed forces in Jaffna, and events prove these violations are an unstoppable process.
