October 1997 LTTE PRESS RELEASE NEWS FROM TAMIL EELAM CAMPAIGNERS FOR THE "DISAPPEARED" RECEIVE MILITARY DEATH THREATS Campaigners of the Guardian Association and the Mothers of the Disappeared (Annaiyar Munnani) - who are clamouring for investigations into cases of disappearances and arbitrary detentions in Jaffna - are receiving sinister "night visits" by Sinhalese military officials, accompanied by death-threats. The military officials, accompanied by Tamil mercenary groups, have issued verbal warnings to these activists that they will be "severely dealt with" if they do not immediately stop their campaign of direct action, which includes token fasts, vigils and marches. These are aimed at getting the Sinhalese government to investigate the hundreds of disappearances and detentions of young Tamil men and women that have occurred since 30,000 Sinhalese troops occupied the Tamil Jaffna peninsula. The military has said that these activists should "fear the worst" from now on. The Sinhalese government and military is known to be increasingly anxious about the high international profile the campaign for the disappeared is receiving. TAMIL EELAM REMEMBERS THE 12 MARTYRS OF PALALI 10 years ago, 17 LTTE fighters were arrested by the Sinhalese navy in a direct contravention of the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord and the written assurances of the Indian forces. Of the 17 LTTE fighters, more than 10 were senior commanders, and both Sri Lanka and India planned to strike a mortal blow to the LTTE by taking them to Colombo. The fighters took cyanide and killed themselves. This was the immediate cause of the war between the LTTE and the Indian so-called Peace-Keeping Forces, commanded by Lt. Gen. Kalkut. The death of the martyrs took place on October 5 1987 and the 10th Anniversary will be remembered in a fitting manner by the nation of Tamil Eelam.
