TamilNet Press Release 9/20/97 Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit ----------------------------------------------------------------- Following Press Release is sent for distribution through TamilNet , by the LTTE international secretariat, 211 Katherine Road, London E6 1BU, United Kingdom, Tel/fax: 0181-470 8593. ----------------------------------------------------------------- LTTE Headquarters, Tamil Eelam. 20.September1997 LTTE PRESS RELEASE NEWS FROM TAMIL EELAM GOVERNMENT DENIES NGO HELP TO DISPLACED TAMILS Sri Lanka's recent order - that NGOs should cease all humanitarian activities in areas not under government control - has made worse the predicament of displaced Tamil civilians in refugee camps in Peththalai and Kalmadu (Batticaloa). The government before only gave these people minimal relief, but now they are denied even that. Also, helped by a handful of Tamil mercenaries, government troops daily harass the Tamil civilians of these camps, using torture, disappearances and arbitrary arrests. Most of the occupants are suffering from shell-shock, and have sores and boils on their bodies. Small pieces from exploding shells are embedded below many people's skin but there are no medical facilities to alleviate their pain and distress. The government deliberately allows the Tamil people to suffer this way as part of its military strategy to try and weaken Tamil resistance. KILINOCHCHI TROOPS STAB MAN AND SON TO DEATH Kilinochchi-based Sinhalese troops have struck again at Tamil civilians, knifing to death a father and son last week. Variapillai Murukesu and Murukesu Palan went to recover belongings from their former home in Kanakapuram (Kilinochchi 9th Farm division) when they were attacked by Sinhala troops in a now-familiar ritual. Their bodies were later discovered with knife cuts. Their bullock cart was found abandoned near St. Jude's church. KFIRS RAID PUTHUVILLANKULAM Tamil residential homes in Puthuvillankulam were blasted to rubble by Sri Lankan Kfir bombers on Wednesday at 8:45 AM. Casualty figures are awaited. TWO DAY SPORTS EVENT IN KILINOCHCHI School sports and athletic events are scheduled for today and tomorrow in Akkarayan Maha Vidyalam grounds in LTTE administered Vanni. Many schools in Kilinochchi district will take part. The chief guest will be the head of Tamil Eelam's education board and the prize-giving will take place at 1:30 PM tomorrow. MOTHER BACKS DAUGHTER'S WISH TO JOIN LTTE In an increasingly typical incident, the mother of a young woman has accompanied her daughter to the LTTE recruiting offices in Puthukudiyiruppu and supported her wish to enlist with the LTTE's women fighters. The proud mother of Kunawathy Fernando said her daughter would help fight the Sinhalese army who were responsible for so many atrocities against the women of Tamil Eelam. The mother, Fernando Josephina, and her daughter have been living in Valaignar Maddam after being displaced from Jaffna peninsula.
