US says LTTE engages in terrorism

The US Secretary of State, under the authority provided by the
Anti-terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996, with the
concurrence of the US Attorney General and Secretary of the Treasury, has
designated 30 armed groups as foreign terrorist organizations, including
the LTTE.


Police seek glory amid paranoia

Sri Lanka Police arrested three persons near Wennapuwa (forty kilometers
north of Colombo) with four hundred machetes on Sept.23.


Sinhalese must unite - paper

The Lankadeepa, the Sri Lankan Sinhala daily with the largest circulation,
exhorted the Sinhalese in its editorial today that  they should bury their
differences and unite to fight the Liberation Tigers.


Upcountry Tamils fear being ignored

The Upcountry People's Front (UPF) will oppose the PA's devolution package
if there is no provision in it to resolve the problems of the hill country
people said Mr. P.Chandrasekeran, leader of the UPF who is deputy Minister
for Public Utilities in the PA government.
