IFCO/P4P Caravan: Chiapas, Nica id BAA21299; Fri, 12 Sep 1997 01:51:01 -0400 Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit Wed, 10 Sep 1997 13:19:13 -0700 (PDT) THE IFCO/PASTORS FOR PEACE FALL CARAVAN TO MEXICO & NICARAGUA Since 1988, IFCO/Pastors for Peace has organized 20 humanitarian aid caravans to Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua in support of communities and non-governmental organizations that are working for peace with justice and dignity. En route to delivering urgently needed material aid, caravans travel to hundreds of communities throughout the U.S. to raise awareness about the effects of U.S. foreign policy on the peoples of Mexico and Central America. The caravans demonstrate the "People's Foreign Policy," which aims to support self-determination and sustainable development. The caravan will increase the international presence in Chiapas, which helps to dissuade Mexican soldiers and privately funded paramilitary groups from committing human rights abuses against indigenous people in the region. NGO's working in support of indigenous people and the peace process in Chiapas, including the Fray Bartolome Center for Human Rights, CONPAZ and the Hospital San Carlos, are also supported by Pastors for Peace caravans. The November Caravan will also bring urgently needed supplies for the further construction and development of URACCAN in order to ensure its continued success as well as support the autonomy process. In addition, the Caravan will continue to support NGO's and sister city projects in other areas of Nicaragua. IFCO/PASTORS FOR PEACE IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR CARAVAN PARTICIPANTS.
