Mexico: 10 Starve to Death after Hurricane Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit Copyright 1997 by Agence France-Presse Sun, 19 Oct 1997 15:00:38 PDT MEXICO CITY, Oct 19 (AFP) - Ten Mexicans have starved to death because aid has not reached their remote villages in the wake of Hurricane Pauline, the daily Cronica newspaper reported Sunday. The 10 people died in the state of Oaxaca, the poorest state in Mexico, local officials said. "there is a serious danger of epidemic and famine" in two villages, said Miguel Angel Colmenares, a senior health official. Communication with some remote towns -- where an estimated 30,000 people live -- still has not been restored nine days after the hurricane hit southern Mexico. Reports from the areas are emerging gradually from rescue workers. Seventeen bridges in Oaxaca were destroyed and many roads are impassable, hampering aid workers' efforts. Meanwhile, local officials in Acapulco, the resort town in Guerrero state that was pummeled by Pauline, have been touting the return of tourists. At least 282 people died when Pauline hit southern Mexico on October 9. ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012 http://www.blythe.org e-mail: nyt@blythe.org ================================================================= nytcamer-10.21.97-13:59:32-6725
