Nonviolent Student Protest Planned in Kosovo, Albania id JAA17537; Sat, 27 Sep 1997 09:45:04 -0400 Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source: Peaceworkers September 24, 1997 Dear Friends, Following is a press release about plans for a major nonviolent protest in Kosovo: For Immediate Release September 24, 1997: Thousands of students of Albanian ethnic nationality in Kosovo, Yugoslavia who have not been allowed to go to the regular schools and the university for the past seven years, will attempt to nonviolently go back to their schools and the university starting Wednesday morning, October 1 in Pristina and other cities in Kosovo. The last large-scale nonviolent demonstrations seven years ago were met with repression and massive arrests and killing by the Serbian authorities. This is a very courageous act on the part of the students to assert their belief in education as a human right and to do so peacefully and nonviolently. This demonstration is being organized by The Independent Student Union in Kosovo. They are inviting the international media and foreign ambassadors and other international observers to come to witness their massive nonviolent demonstrations and tell the world what they see. In the United States, call Peaceworkers at 415-751-0302 for more information. Please share this press release with any good media contacts. One of the best ways to help keep the demonstration nonviolent will be if there are international media people present. I will be going to Kosovo Sunday Sept. 28 for three weeks as an international observer. Let me know if you would like to receive reports of what happens there. If the effort is ongoing and they ask for continued international presence, we will try to help recruit people who would be interested in going over to Kosovo as international observers. Let us know if you would be interested in going as an internantional observer on a short-term team or know of other good people who might be interested in going. People would need to raise their own financial support to cover their expenses. Thanks for your interest and support of this nonviolent protest. Please keep the students, teachers and the police and Serbian army in your prayers.
