ADAMS CONDEMNS UNIONISTS Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source:"J. Dana" ADAMS CONDEMNS UNIONISTS 11/04/97 13:06 EST Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams today condemned Ulster Unionists for what he claimed was a refusal to treat the multi-party peace talks seriously. And he called on the British and Irish governments to act to solve the problem. "The unionists will not embrace change because they perceive change is to their disadvantage and to the advantage of nationalists and therefore it's almost quite understandable and logical that they would have that position." Eight parties are involved in the talks which are due to reach a conclusion next May. Republicans have claimed in the past week that unionists were behaving "like children" in the talks. The Ulster Unionist Party is the biggest party in Northern Ireland and it faced stiff opposition to its decision to join the talks. Two other unionist parties are boycotting the process. Adams said: "Even though there may be exchanges of views there is no negotiation and no real engagement." He alleged that party leader David Trimble wanted to destroy the talks from inside. "If David Trimble was giving a more positive leadership to his section of our people, I think there would be a more positive response." __________________________________________________________ The Irish American Information Service is a non-profit organization provding up-to-the-minute objective coverage of news as it happens in Ireland and the North.
