Colin Duffy Released Again after Second Arrest Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source:gkennedy@iais.org REPUBLICAN RELEASED 10/10/97 16:24 EST Lurgan republican Colin Duffy, re-arrested yesterday after walking free from jail a week ago, claimed he had been physically maltreated during a search carried out by a Royal Irish Regiment patrol. Nationalists in the County Armagh town erupted in anger when witnesses to the incident and others joined in a protest outside the RUC barracks to condemn the action. A doctor was called to the barracks to attend Mr Duffy who was released around 6PM last night. The 29-year-old claimed the incident was the latest case of harassment since he was released from jail last Friday. "I was asked if it was OK for a search and that was OK. There was no problem with my upper half but when he moved down to my lower half he grabbed the belt on my trousers and started yanking it up the ways. It was pretty sore around the testicle area. So from that I told him I was complying with the search and there was no need to be rough and violent about it." "He didn't listen. He went on with the same thing again. He then stuck his hands in my pockets and started hauling about but at the same time he was doing it. So at that stage the child had seen what he was at and she went into hysterics. She was sitting in the car a couple of feet away. The next thing was there was a scuffle and he ended up getting a sore eye out of it after I was pushed and dug in the private area." An RUC spokesman confirmed a man had been arrested at High Street, Lurgan, around 3.50pm yesterday following a complaint of assault. The matter is currently under investigation, he said. Mr Duffy's solicitor Rosemary Nelson said she has now advised her client to keep a register of searches, times and manner carried out by the RIR and RUC. Ms Nelson said: "Colin Duffy was taken in regarding an alleged assault on an RIR man. This is just the latest incident and it was particularly violent. His child was pushed away and was hysterical. Colin Duffy retaliated by pushing the RIR man away." Ms Nelson claimed Colin Duffy has been stopped on numerous occasions since he was released from jail last Friday. oOo The Irish American Information Service is a non-profit orginization provding up-to-the-minute objective coverage of news as it happens in Ireland and the North.
