Invited guests include speakers from the nationalist and unionist communities, as well as the Irish diaspora. Historians, artists, and activists will engage the audience in an exploration of the many contemporary political, cultural, and psychological ramifications of An Gorta Mor, The Great Hunger. This is the proposed schedule for the two day seminar to be held at Hunter College, 68th Street and Lexington Avenue, NYC, NY Saturday, November 1 11:00 - 1:00 Legacies of the Starvation in Ulster Moderator: John Waters, journalist for the Irish Times, writer and cultural commentator Christine Kinealy, historian from Liverpool, England and author of This Great Calamity and A Death-Dealing Famine, presenting her research on the famine in Ulster. Billy Hutchinson, press officer in Belfast of the Progressive Unionist Party, speaking on the effects of the famine on Protestant communities in Ulster, and the famine's legacy of Irish-American militancy. Mary Nelis, Sinn Fein Councilwoman from Derry, discussing the historical and contemporary implications of the famine in Ulster's Nationalist community. Dialogue with the audience 1:45 - 5:00 Contemporary Reverberations of An Gorta Mor Moderator: John Waters California State Senator Tom Hayden, editor of a new collection of writings on the famine entitled, The Irish Hunger, speaking on the effects of the famine on the Irish in America. Dr. Garrett O'Connor, psychiatrist and expert on traumatic stress, speaking on the psychological effects of colonialism and the famine on the Irish at home and in the diaspora. Questions & Answers with all panelists Sunday, November 2 11:00 - 6:00 Hidden History: Evidence, Echoes, and Laments Panel A: Moderator, Ann Gaughan, of the American Protestants for Truth about Ireland Dr. Charles Orser, archeologist currently excavating a famine site in County Roscommon, discussing findings and exhibiting artifacts from the site. Gary White Deer, Choctaw Indian activist and founder of CAIT, describing response to current famines by Indian and Irish people working together. Johnny Cunningham, Scottish musician presenting information about the legacies of the Scottish Highland Clearances. Kit DeFever, describing the emotional impact of finding and photographing famine grave sites in Ireland and Canada. Panel B: Moderator: Fionnula Flanagan, actor Helena Mulkerns, author of Famine Fever, reading from her work. Micheal O'Maille, poet and linguist, speaking about the impact of the famine on Irish language and culture. Catherine Marshall, Curator, Irish Museum of Modern Art, discussing the problems of representing the famine in Irish art. Peter Quinn, author of Banished Children of Eve .
