From IAIS: IRA MEMBERS RESIGN Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit IRA MEMBERS RESIGN 11/12/97 11:26 EST Up to 35 IRA members of a key battalion in south Armagh have resigned, it was reported today. The bulk of the organization's First Battalion - based around Crossmaglen - is said to have quit in protest at the current direction of the Republican Movement. The reports come days after the IRA confirmed it had lost a "small number of members" after resignations during an IRA summit in Donegal. And at least 12 members of Sinn Fein in County Lough have also resigned. A man claiming to represent the south Armagh dissidents said today they were acting in solidarity with the others who resigned. Ulster Unionist MP Ken Maginnis said he was skeptical about reports of dissention. "It may be that the whole thing is being orchastrated by the leadership - who see the inevitability of a return to the Armalite - orchestrating this to get in the short term the greatest concession from Mo Mowlam."
