ADAMS BACKS McALEESE

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams has backed Irish government
candidate Mary McAleese for the Irish presidency. He said
the professor from North Belfast had the experience and
qualities necessary for the job. He added that having
someone from Northern Ireland as president could benefit
peace.

He said: "The fact that someone from the Six Counties would
be in the highest office in the land and would be able to
reflect, in a very open way, the sense of unionist and
nationalist as well as the office would certainly help to
consolidate and would be progressive and positive."
Professor McAleese is one of five candidates hoping to
replace Mary Robinson.
