IAIS: Fallout from Leaks Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit FALLOUT FROM LEAKS 10/20/97 14:25 EST Northern Ireland Alliance Party leader, John Alderdice today called on Professor Mary McAleese to stand down for the presidential election. Speaking as he arrived for the Stormont talks on the future of Northern Ireland this morning, he said: "It's clear that... her continued candidature is a problem. If she were to be elected by the people of the Republic... it would not be seen as a positive contribution to the peace process." Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams defended Prof. McAleese and hit out at the "sinister campaign of destabalisation". "What is required now - and I think this makes sense in any negotiating process - is one where the... democratic opinion on this island is focused and united about tackling the main issue. Instead of this we have division, we have distraction, we have vilification and we have a campaign of Macarthyism." Prof McAleese, the hot favourite of the five candidates to win the vote on Thursday week, has denied she supports Sinn Fein, saying she has always supported the SDLP. __________________________________________________________ The Irish American Information Service is a non-profit orginization provding up-to-the-minute objective coverage of news as it happens in Ireland and the North.
