IAIS: SPRING MIGHT STEP ASID Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source: "J. Dana" SPRING MIGHT STEP ASIDE 11/03/97 12:51 EST Labour Party leader, Dick Spring is today said to be assessing whether he wants to lead the Labour Party for the significant future. A motion of confidence in Mr Spring has been tabled for a meeting on Wednesday of the parliamentary Labour party. Brendan Howlin, the party whip, says Mr Spring has the overwhelming support of the party. He says there has to be root and branch restructuring of the party. Labour Party deputy leader Ruairi Quinn has said he believes that Dick Spring still has a contribution to make to the party. Speaking to RTE News, Mr Quinn said he would be urging him to stay on, but the decision was up to Mr Spring. Asked whether he would be interested in the job, Mr Quinn said that should Mr Spring resign as deputy leader he would automatically assume the position. Today's speculation comes at a low point for Labour. Their Presidential candidate, Adi Roche fared particularly poorly in the recent election. Senior party advisor, Fergus Finlay has also resigned his position in light of recent electoral losses including the general election when labour suffered a significant loss in support. Mr Spring was also instrumental in the downfall of the Albert Reynolds' led coalition government which initiated the Northern Ireland peace process. __________________________________________________________ The Irish American Information Service is a non-profit orginization provding up-to-the-minute objective coverage of news as it happens in Ireland and the North.
