Dana" News from the Irish American Information Service 19 September 1997 email: gkennedy@iais.org ------------------------------------------------ GRENADE ATTACK IN DERRY 09/19/97 10:43 EST The Irish National Liberation Army has said its members carried out a grenade attack on a police station in Derry last night. The fringe republican paramilitary group said it threw the device at at Rosemount RUC station but that it failed to explode. British army bomb disposal experts destroyed the grenade in a controlled explosion this morning. The group has yet to follow the IRA's lead in calling a ceasefire. A resident condemned the security forces for not evacuating the area until this morning after the warning was phoned to a newsroom last night. "I'm very concerned that it has been there from last night," he said. The device landed several feet from the home of Derry Sinn Fein councillor, Marian Hutchin. She said those responsible for the grenade attack, if it was one, were "not helping the search for a negotiating settlement". She said the RUC owed the residents an explanation why they weren't told about the warning about the grenade until 8am today. Sarah Kelly, principal of St Joseph's school, which was evacuated, hit out at whoever threw the grenade. "It angers me and saddens me that once again we're supposed to be in a situation where we're supposed to be in a situation where we have peace, and we walk into that this morning. It's dreadful, our boys coming in there this morning and meeting this. The last day of the week, you're anxious to keep the boys on target, and you have a complete day of disruption." The RUC described it as "an attack on the whole community".
