Ms McAliskey, who is wanted in connection with last year's IRA mortar attack at Osnabruck army base, is currently on bail at a psychiatric hospital in south London. This afternoon, Bow Street magistrates Court ruled that they were not prepared to commit Ms McAliskey in her absence and adjourned the case until October 9. Ms McAliskey's lawyers will now seek further medical advice on whether she will be fit to come to court then. Earlier story: 09/29/97 21:47 Copyright 1997 PA News McALISKEY EXTRADITION HEARING TODAY By Elisa Crawford, PA News The full court hearing to decide whether IRA suspect Roisin McAliskey should be extradited to Germany is taking place today. McAliskey, who is wanted in connection with a mortar bomb attack on a British Army barracks in Osnabruck last summer, is unlikely to attend the hearing at Bow Street magistrates court, central London. The 25-year-old, who has become a cause celebre for human rights groups, is suffering from post-natal depression after the birth of her daughter, Loinnir, in May. McAliskey, daughter of former nationalist MP Bernadette McAliskey, is currently in a secure mother and baby unit at a London psychiatric hospital because of the poor state of her health. She has been held in custody since her arrest in Northern Ireland late last year. Her lawyer, Gareth Peirce, said: "It will be a short hearing and the likelihood is Roisin will not be present." Under European rules, no evidence is put before the court in an extradition hearing. The German authorities must simply confirm the identity of McAliskey and give particulars of the offence and the relevant law which has been broken, the Home Office confirmed. If the court grants an extradition order, the case is referred to Home Secretary Jack Straw for a final decision. Fuascailt, which campaigns for the freedom of Irish political prisoners, said members would be demonstrating outside the court at the start of the hearing at 2pm. A spokesman said: "We demand that the British Government refuse to extradite Roisin McAliskey and her three-month-old daughter, Loinnir, to Germany where there is no evidence to support the claim that she was involved in any illegal activity." ****************************** source: Jay Dooling (jdooling@worldnet.att.net) Irish Aires - 90.1FM KPFT in Houston http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Irish_Aires/homepage.htm Dooling & Mabe, CPA http://www.doolingmabe-cpa.com/ ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012 http://www.blythe.org e-mail: nyt@blythe.org ================================================================= nytire-10.01.97-14:30:50-24450
