RUC Terms IRA Ceasefire "Remarkably Stable" Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source:"J. Dana" 'IRA CEASEFIRE REMARKABLY STABLE'-FLANAGAN 11/03/97 15:12 EST RUC Chief Constable Ronnie Flanagan today described the IRA ceasefire as "remarkably stable". But he said it was much too early to judge whether the IRA had permanently abandoned violence. "Up to this point it has been remarkably stable, if you like, for us, with a very significantly reduced level of activity generally which we have to deal with," Mr Flanagan said. Flanagan said: "There are a number of organisations who have no intention of being engaged in a ceasefire at this stage - the INLA (Irish National Liberation Army), the Continuity IRA and the LVF (Loyalist Volunteer Force)- and they pose a realistic threat. As far as the (Provisional) IRA is concerned at the moment, while it is much too soon to say that what they have engaged is in any way permanent, nevertheless, from out point of view it represents a very significantly reduced level of terrorist threat and that has allowed us to react accordingly." But he added: "The IRA still exists and therefore must be considered a threat to peace." Flanagan was speaking on the eve of the anniversary of his first year in office. __________________________________________________________ The Irish American Information Service is a non-profit organization provding up-to-the-minute objective coverage of news as it happens in Ireland and the North.
