Mr. Adams said: "As I have already pointed out Mr. Bruton was anxious to get my endorsement when he was elected as Taoiseach at a critical time in the peace process. He should not now condemn me for expressing an opinion. If John Hume had allowed his name to go forward and if I had responded in the same way to his candidacy, would Mr. Bruton have been so forthright? His position is inconsistent and dishonest. Mr. Bruton and his colleagues should withdraw their criticism and accept that Irish people whether from the north or south have a right to stand in this election and that everyone, and not just him or his party, has a right to express an opinion on who is best suited for the challenging role of Irish President." 16 October 1997 'Video Cameras To Be Installed In Interrogation Centres' Belfast Sinn Fiin councillor, Michael Browne, has described news of the RUC intent to install video cameras in Castlereigh and Geough Barracks as being much too little too late. Mr. Browne said: "This measure will be of little comfort to the many thousand people who over the years have been brutalised at the hands of RUC Interrogators in these notorious centres. Many of these people were forced into making false but nontheless self-incriminating confessions and on the basis of these convicted by a corrupt judiciary to long years of imprisonment. The RUC need not think that this measure will make them any more acceptable. Their role in a legal and judicial system which has been condemned the world over leaves them with no part to play in future policing arrangements in this country." ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012 http://www.blythe.org e-mail: nyt@blythe.org ================================================================= nytire-10.19.97-22:46:53-14512
