The Wellcome Trust will contribute IR1m per year, for the next three academic years and the Department of Health has committed to a similar investment. The funding is targeted at boosting biomedical research and creating the incentive for skilled specialists working overseas to return home. The fund will be used primarily to fund research grants and research scholarships with technical support. Health Research Board Chairman, Professor Michael Murphy, outlined the project saying, "A major aim is to reverse the brain drain, to attract back to Ireland Irish graduates working successfully abroad". Professor Murphy said Ireland was morally obliged to support research in the medical sphere as success in this area could attract additional investment by companies with interests in related areas. UU SCIENTISTS MAKING PROGRESS IN SEARCH FOR CANCER CURE - A trio of scientists based at the University of Ulster's School of Biomedical Science, at the Jordanstown campus, have made significant inroads into the search for a cancer cure. Dr Stephanie McKeown, Dr Janice Baillie and Professor David Hirst have centred their studies on the behaviour of pericytes which control normal cell growth and seem to be absent in abnormal or tumours cells. The scientists believe if they can develop a drug to imitate the chemical signals which are sent by pericytes, this could control or halt tumour growth. The pioneering work of the Jordanstown team has stirred interest in research circles and has anchored a two year research funding grant from the Cancer Research campaign. IR15,000 SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED FOR STUDIES IN DISABILITY - Three scholarships worth IR15,000 have been awarded to postgraduate research students who carried out studies in different areas of disability. The scholarships were presented by the National Rehabilitation Board to Frances Horgan, Catherine Blake and Susan Codd who carried out research on the social and economic costs of renal disease, recovery from stroke and the provision of access for the disabled to buildings.
