The company's executive vice president, Joseph Connor, was in Galway this week to announce the new project and said the establishment of the Internship was in recognition of the high quality work carried out by the University's law faculty. Successful graduates will work in the New Jersey, Schering-Plough headquarters for three months of legal training. It should be noted that the University Colleges of Ireland (Galway, Maynooth, Cork and Dublin) have been renamed the National University of Ireland, although not all the colleges have implemented the change yet. DIT LECTURERS PROTEST AGAINST LACK OF FULL-TIME POSITIONS - Lecturers at the Dublin Institute of Technology have decided against co-operating with a seven member body which has the power to advise on the upgrading of DIT to university status. The move is part of a continuing protest against the lack of full time positions for part time staff at the Aungier Street campus. The Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) said the lecturers would not communicate with the review group until the longstanding issue is resolved. IR40M CAPITAL INVESTMENT FOR WATERFORD INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY - Capital investment worth IR40m is to be injected into upgrade projects at Waterford Institute of Technology over the next decade. Junior Minister Michael Cullen announced the commitment while addressing the Graduates Association of the Institute last weekend. Projects include an initial IR4m investment for library facilities, with a further IR3m in Phase Two. Waterford was the first RTC to be awarded Institute of Technology status, and all indications point towards increased autonomy for the institute. POSTGRADUATE COURSE IN NEWSPAPER JOURNALISM AT UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER - The University of Ulster has launched a one year postgraduate course in newspaper journalism. The programme is the first one of its kind in the North and newspaper editors were closely consulted in the drawing up of the course structure. The political position of Northern Ireland made it an obvious choice for a journalism course, "Belfast at the moment must rate as one of the best places in Europe to train to be a journalist" says course tutor, Liz Fawcett. FIRST LADY TO GIVE INAUGURAL ADDRESS OF JOYCE MCCARTAN CHAIR AT UU - The University of Ulster says it will invite Hillary Clinton to give an inaugural address at the dedication of a chair to a woman she met on her 1995 Northern visit. Joyce McCartan, a lifelong activist for peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland, spoke with America's First Lady for an hour when Mrs Clinton visited the Ormeau Road Women's Centre during the presidential stay. Mrs McCartan died soon after the visit. MAJOR SURVEY OF DRUG USE IN THIRD LEVEL EDUCATION BY USI - The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) has launched a national drug survey in an attempt to estimate levels of drug abuse and to remedy the alarming increase of drug related problems at third level institutions. The survey launch corresponded with the re-introduction of the USI's Drugs Awareness Campaign targeted at first year students. Deputy President Helen Ryan said, as the largest student representative body in the country, the USI felt it had a responsibility to carry out such a study and provide solid informative results. When the results are published next year they will be freely available to government agencies in addition to statutory and voluntary organisations. This will be the most comprehensive drug poll carried out in the country; however previous studies have centred on individual institutions. An independent study into cannabis usage at UCD, published this week, revealed 60% of students interviewed had tried the drug, and earlier this year 64% of the 400 students surveyed at DIT said they had tried illegal drugs. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON IRISH EMIGRATION AT NUIC - The international conference on Irish emigration, entitled "The Scattering", took place at the National University of Ireland, Cork recently. The brainchild of The Irish Centre for Migration Studies at UCC, it presented an array of distinguished speakers to examine the structural causes and effects of sustained emigration over a prolonged period, from the Great Famine of 1845 to the present day. For further information on all aspects of the three day event contact Marion Elders, Conference Administrator, Irish Centre for Migration Studies, University College Cork. Tel: +353-21-902898, fax: +353-21-271198, email: or access the website at SIT DOWN PROTEST AT QUB AGAINST IMPLEMENTATION OF UNIVERSITY FEES - Students at Queen's University Belfast held a sit down protest last week at the proposed implementation of university fees. Students sat in a line across University Road, preventing traffic movement along the busy stretch. The demonstration was designed to coincide with voting at the Labour Party conference in Brighton where the government had just balloted in favour of abolishing the traditional grant system and replacing it with the fee paying scheme. > > > > > > > > > JOB ADVERTISEMENTS < < < < < < < < < IBM STORAGE SYSTEMS DIVISION IBM, the world's leading technology leader in electronic data storage, is starting up a new manufacturing plant in the Dublin area.
