After months of disquiet on the Cork campus the decision by Minister for Education Micheal Martin was warmly received by staff and students. Since the upgrade of Waterford Institute of Technology was announced in January, staff and students at Cork have been threatening lecture strikes and industrial action. At that time Mr Martin, who was the Fianna Fail education spokesman, voiced his surprise that Cork would not be upgraded alongside Waterford as it was the most sought after RTC in the CAO/CAS system. The upgrade and the announcement of IR1m funding to establish a new information technology unit was made last Friday during the conferring ceremonies of almost 1,700 students. Patrick Kelleher, Director of Cork RTC, commented: "This is wonderful news. It's good for the pupils, it's good for the staff and especially it's good for Cork." It is believed the new status will be implemented before Christmas. The previous day Minister for Public Affairs, Mary O'Rourke announced Athlone Regional Technical College would be awarded Institute of Technology status within months. The comments made during a presidential campaign stop-off in Athlone were welcomed by Students Union president Brendan Kiely. However in his Cork speech on Friday, Mr Martin did not mention the Athlone upgrade, merely commenting that he thought IT status should be awarded to all colleges in some way. It is thought that the interim review group established to evaluate the upgrade of colleges has not processed an application for Institute of Technology status from Athlone RTC. BUSINESS PROGRAMME FOR GRADUATE ENTREPRENEURS - Entrepreneurs in the south-east will be given a boost by a new Graduate Enterprise Business Programme pioneered by Waterford Institute of Technology and supported by Carlow RTC. The programme was launched by Defence Minister Michael Smith who said it was "fantastic news for graduates with a technology-led idea and the motivation to make a new business work." The project aims to utilise the useful resources in the south-east area so that enterprising graduates will get the best back-up and support to develop and establish their business ideas. In addition to the help offered by the higher level institutions, the programme will be aided by Forbairt, The Operational Programme for Industry and the South-Esat Business and Innovation Centre. Information is available from Programme Manager Michael Cass at Waterford Institute of Technology. NCIR LAUNCHES BLUEPRINT FOR COLLEGE OF THE 21ST CENTURY - The National College of Industrial Relations (NCIR) has launched a comprehensive blueprint for the College of the 21st Century in which the vision and philosophy represent a new departure in both teaching and learning. The proposed initiative will encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning, accessing course material through multi-media and the Internet. An international advisory committee will be established to help NCIR with the development of a new informatics and engineering faculty which will expand the existing faculties of business and humanities. The committee will comprise top academics from computer science and engineering faculties in US universities such as Berkeley, Stanford and Cornell. The present NCIR network of thirty-five off campus centres will be developed into a national network of Knowledge Resource Centres to provide local community and industry with access to the resources of a third-level institution. It is hoped this aspect of the college will become the backbone of the project. See NCIR advertisement in this issue for Head of New Faculty of Informatics. NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF IRELAND AWARDS 29 SPORTS SCHOLARSHIPS - University College Cork has awarded sports scholarships to 29 students for this academic year. Speaking at the award ceremony Kieran Dowd, Director of Physical & Educational Sports, said those who received the scholarships would now act as role models for others: "The idea behind the scheme is to reward those who demonstrate great ability and who show potential for the future." ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION COMENIUS AT ST MARY'S COLLEGE BELFAST - The Annual meeting of Association Comenius was held in St Mary's Teacher Training College in Belfast last weekend. The Association, whose members are drawn from 17 higher education institutions, promotes intercultural programmes in teacher education. The European dimension of the initiative is particularly relevant to St Mary's which actively participates in the Socrates-Erasmus programme, the student cultural exchange programme. The College annually dispatches 40 trainee teachers to a course of overseas study and teaching. In return European students come to Belfast as part of the transcultural aim of the project.
