from IAIS: PRISON MEETING 'FRANK AND OPEN' Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit PRISON MEETING 'FRANK AND OPEN' 10/23/97 16:57 EST SINN Fein emerged yesterday from its first meeting with a British minister for discussions solely on prisoner's issue to accuse the British government of moving too slowly. Britain's Northern Ireland Security Minister Adam Ingram had talks with Sinn Fein yesterday to hear demands for the early release and transfer of republican prisoners from English jails. Sinn Fein came away saying nothing emerged to suggest the government was ready to meet its demands for prisoner releases as part of the peace process. Dodie McGuinness said the meeting had been "frank and open" and addressed many issues relating to prisoners. But she said there was nothing said by the minister to suggest prisoner releases were imminent - Mr Ingram had said it was a matter for discussion in the multi-party talks. Mr Ingram said the Stormont meeting, at which he was accompanied by Alan Shannon, the head of the Northern Ireland prison service, had been constructive. He said he planned to respond to a number of points raised. __________________________________________________________ The Irish American Information Service is a non-profit orginization provding up-to-the-minute objective coverage of news as it happens in Ireland and the North.
