Friday 10 October, 1997 (11:55am AEST) A truce has been declared in the nine-year civil war on the Papua New Guinea island of Bougainville. Libby Hakaraia reports, the surprise move comes after two weeks of peace talks in New Zealand. For the past fortnight, officials from the warring factions, including the Papua New Guinea Government, have been holding peace talks at the Burnam Army Camp in Christchurch. A media black out has existed throughout the talks, but at today's closing ceremony it was announced that the decision to sign a truce had been accepted unaniomously. The truce calls for an immediate stop to the armed conflict on the island for all parties to work towards reconciliation and for a return to normalcy of government services.
