     AUSTRALIA SIGNS NEW DEFENCE PACT
     WITH PNG
     Thursday 23 October, 1997 (3:07am AEST)

          Australia has signed a new defence agreement with Papua
          New Guinea.

          Defence Minister Ian McLachlan says the agreement
          expresses the common principles for defence relations
          between both countries, such as openness, transparency and
          support for democratic processes.

          Mr McLachlan says under the new defence partnership, joint
          activities will focus on strategic planning; management; and
          fundamental military skills such as leadership and discipline.

          P-N-G's Defence Minister Mao Zeming is in Canberra this
          week with a team of defence officials to discuss the bilateral
          defence relationship.
